Moving house is exciting, but getting everything organised for moving day can feel overwhelming. There’s packing to arrange, belongings to sort, utilities to notify and plenty of smaller jobs that are easy to overlook.
The best way to keep your move under control is to start early and break everything down into manageable stages. Our week-by-week moving checklist takes you through the key things to organise, from eight weeks before your move right through to settling into your new home.
Whether you’re moving locally in Bourne, Stamford, Spalding or Peterborough, or relocating further afield, working through the list gradually can help reduce last-minute stress and keep moving day running smoothly.
Use this checklist alongside your removal company’s advice, and tick off each task as you go.
8 Weeks Before Moving
- Start getting quotes from professional removal companies.
- Create a moving folder for quotes, contacts, paperwork and receipts.
- Check notice periods for your rental agreement and utility contracts.
- Start decluttering your home, working through cupboards, wardrobes, garages, lofts and storage areas.
- Sort unwanted belongings into four categories: keep, sell, donate or recycle.
- Decide which items you definitely want to take with you and which can be left behind.
6 Weeks Before Moving
- Order your packing materials, including boxes, tape, protective paper and bubble wrap.
- Start packing items you don't use regularly, such as books, ornaments, pictures and seasonal belongings.
- Label every box with the room it belongs in and a brief description of its contents.
- If you're moving with children, notify their school and arrange any necessary paperwork.
- Check whether any large or unusual items require additional planning for transportation.
4 Weeks Before Moving
- Continue packing less frequently used belongings.
- Measure larger furniture and check doorways, staircases and access at your new property.
- Arrange parking permits or parking restrictions if required at either address.
- Safely dispose of items your removal company cannot transport, such as certain paints and chemicals.
- If you're moving a long distance, arrange any necessary vehicle servicing or travel plans.
3 Weeks Before Moving
- Arrange childcare or pet care for moving day where necessary.
- Start using food from your freezer and pantry rather than buying large quantities of new supplies.
- Begin thinking about what you will need on moving day and what should travel with you rather than in the removal vehicle.
2 Weeks Before Moving
- Confirm your moving date, arrival time, access arrangements and parking with your removal company.
- Make sure your removal team has accurate details for both properties.
- Set aside important documents, valuables and personal items that you intend to keep with you.
- Contact your utility providers and arrange final readings or transfers for electricity, gas, water and broadband.
- Update your address with organisations including:
- Bank and financial providers
- Insurance companies
- Employer
- Subscriptions
- Schools and clubs
- Arrange Royal Mail redirection if required.
1 Week Before Moving
- Finish packing the majority of your belongings, leaving out only the items you'll need during your final few days.
- Defrost your freezer around 24–48 hours before moving, following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Confirm key collection arrangements for your new property.
- Make sure boxes are securely sealed and clearly labelled.
- Keep important documents and valuables somewhere safe and separate from the main removal.
1–2 Days Before Moving
- Pack an overnight essentials bag containing clothes, toiletries, towels, medication, phone chargers and other personal essentials.
- Prepare an essentials box with items such as a kettle, tea, coffee, mugs, glasses and basic cutlery.
- Prepare a second box containing basic cleaning supplies, washing-up liquid, cloths and other useful household items.
- Finish any remaining packing.
- Disassemble larger furniture if this has been agreed with your removal team or is necessary for transportation.
- Keep essential tools and chargers easily accessible.
Moving Day
- Keep passports, documents, valuables, medication and other important personal items with you.
- Keep children and pets safely away from the main moving activity.
- Make sure pathways and access areas are clear for the removal team.
- Take final meter readings at your old property.
- Check every room, cupboard, garage, loft and outdoor space before leaving.
- Complete a final walkthrough and make sure windows and doors are secure.
- Hand over the keys as arranged.
After the Move
Once you're in your new home, don't feel you have to unpack everything immediately. Start with the essentials and work through the remaining boxes room by room.
- Unpack your essentials first.
- Check that electricity, gas, water and internet services are working.
- Check appliances and report any issues promptly.
- Update your driving licence and vehicle details if required.
- Register with local services, including a GP and dentist where necessary.
- Gradually work through the remaining boxes.
- Recycle or dispose of packing materials responsibly.
- Once you've settled in, leave a review for your removal company.
